Back on 1815, a large volcanic eruption - although nothing like that - in Indonesia had caused the following year of 1816 to be the year without summer = one of the most horrible and shocking natural disasters in recorded human History, also causing destruction at a global scale.
So, such a catastrophy could very well have been the cause of Neanderthal and Denisovan extinctions.
