Well, obviously we must be careful at our assumptions; after all, we only have one single skull, and its state of preservation is NOT good.

However, I most definitely tend to believe that we are looking at THE Founding Father of the genus Homo, and that it is a pretty safe bet to assume that this is the guy who created the said stone tools 3.3 million years ago, and not any of "Lucy"'s ancestors (whose brains, as we all know, was no bigger than a chimp's). This is, most likely, the direct ancestor of Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus - and us.
