I Could Never Truly Understand

Why having any national borders to begin with.. Who needs it, exccept for the ruling elite (regardless of who they might be = tycoons, politicians, generals, religious leaders, party bosses... doesn't matter), to maintain their matrix of control of their "free" subjects.

During ancient times, like the Bronze Age - while there already were different kingdoms, which had ruled a certain area each - there were no border fences, passports, or the need to obtain a special government permission in order to live and work, if you happened to wish to relocate to someplace that you found more appealing than your own.

So, why having all those nonsense now?
